What to Expect
your first visit
What happens during an evaluation?
Your evaluation helps us understand how the muscles of your mouth, face and airway are functioning together. We'll talk about your concerns, assess your individual needs and determine whether myofunctional therapy may be appropriate for you or your child.
Your evaluation may include:
» Tonsils and adenoids
» Mouth breathing vs. nasal breathing
» Where the tongue rests in the mouth
» Tongue-tie
» Orthodontic treatment
» Jaw pain and dysfunction
» Head, neck, and facial pain
» Snoring and sleep apnea
» Facial structure
» Habits such as thumb and finger sucking
A partnership in care
Your role in success
Your Success Takes Commitment
Myofunctional therapy isn't limited to what happens during an appointment. Consistent practice between visits is an important part of developing healthier muscle patterns and lasting function.
Treatment often includes a structured program of exercises practiced regularly at home. The length of treatment varies by individual needs and goals, but many programs take approximately 6–12 months.
We'll give you a clear plan and work with you throughout the process so you understand what you're working toward and how you're progressing.
This version feels much better to me than “consistent exercise every day is necessary until the patient has fixed their improper muscle pattern.” That wording is pretty harsh and clinical compared with the new site.
Before your appointment
A few important details.
Cancellations
If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please provide at least 48 hours' notice. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours' notice are non-refundable.
Insurance & Payment
Tri-State Myofunctional Therapy is a fee-for-service practice and does not bill insurance directly. This allows us to develop treatment based on each patient's needs rather than insurance requirements.
We can provide appropriate documentation for you to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. FSA and HSA payments are accepted, and financing options may also be available.
Please Include All Decision-Makers
For a comprehensive evaluation, we ask that everyone responsible for healthcare decisions participate whenever possible. This gives us time to answer everyone's questions and make sure all parties understand the recommended plan of care.
